This course introduces students to the philosophical investigation of human nature through the classical Aristotelian and Thomistic traditions. Beginning with fundamental concepts in metaphysics and philosophy of nature—including matter and form, actuality and potentiality, and the nature of living beings—the course develops a systematic account of the distinctive capacities of human life. Topics include the relationship between body and soul, the different forms of life, sensory perception, appetite and emotion, intellectual knowledge, will, and freedom. Particular attention is given to the unity of the human being and the relationship between human nature and rational action. The course provides psychology students with a philosophical framework for understanding human cognition, affectivity, and agency.
